Meet the Team
Susan Drolet Coneybeer, PsyD. and Becky Lombardo, LCSW started Intensive Care Counseling in 2020 after recognizing that the traditional weekly therapy model was not supporting many people who needed more time. They found that couples were facing more stress and needed support to communicate more clearly and feel calmer.
Our Approach
As therapists trained in trauma work, we know that our past experiences can shape how we act and think today. Those experiences can also affect how we talk to and connect with our partner. Sometimes we don’t even realize these old patterns are affecting our relationship.
At Intensive Care Counseling, we work with you as a couple. We help you understand what is getting in the way of your relationship and learn practical ways to communicate better. We also help you let go of old beliefs and patterns that may no longer be helpful.
We believe your relationship can be an important source of love, joy, and support. But when you are stuck in conflict, it can create stress and affect your emotional and physical well-being. It can also affect the whole family and other parts of your life.
Imagine being able to hear each other more clearly, understand each other better, and feel connected again.

CO-FOUNDER
If your relationship is going through a difficult change right now, you may be wondering, “How do we find each other again?” Perhaps you find yourself feeling distant and unsure about how to reconnect after years of avoiding the same conversations that go nowhere. Maybe you have tried to get close again, and you found yourself disappointed and stuck. You’re realizing that somewhere along the way, the two of you have become more like roommates than partners.
I’ve worked with couples for more than 25 years, and I especially enjoy helping couples reconnect. Whether you’re trying to heal after betrayal or learning how to build a new relationship after the empty nest or retirement, I can help you understand the patterns that have created distance and find new ways of relating to each other.
Sometimes couples get stuck in the same conversations and conflicts without understanding why they keep happening. You may feel unheard, misunderstood, or unsure how to reach your partner without making things worse. My role is to help you slow those patterns down, understand what is happening between you, and learn communication strategies that help you feel safer, more understood, and more connected.
I use Gottman-informed approaches and Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to help couples talk about difficult things in a way that creates understanding rather than more conflict. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting (BSP), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.
Together, we can work toward rebuilding trust, restoring emotional and physical intimacy, and creating a relationship that feels connected and meaningful in this next chapter of your lives.

If you’re thinking seriously about marriage and have some reservations about the commitment, or if you’ve recently married and are realizing there are differences you need to work through, you are not alone.
Often, couples coming out of the “honeymoon” phase of their relationship begin to face realities that are harder to work through. Maybe you’re beginning to wonder, “If we’re struggling with this now, what will this look like five or ten years from now?”
This is one of my favorite times to work with couples. I will help you slow things down, understand what’s happening underneath the conflict, and learn how to communicate in a way that helps you feel heard and understood.
We can also explore the experiences and relationship patterns each of you brings into the relationship and how those patterns may be affecting the way you connect with each other.
Most patterns are attempts to have specific needs met. I will help you develop new patterns of communicating so you can more clearly express what you need and work through conflict with less frustration and more understanding.
I use Nonviolent Communication (NVC) strategies to increase connection. I am also trained in Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO) – a couples approach developed out of Internal Family Systems (IFS). Other therapy may include Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Brainspotting if deeper work is requested. The goal isn’t to decide who is right or wrong. It’s to help you understand each other more clearly and find a way forward together.
